Understanding Kapha Dosha

Did you know that you are a unique mix of the 5 elements (air, ether, earth, water and fire)? In Ayurveda this is called your mind body type or dosha. Working with your dosha is key to a healthy and happy life. Every dosha governs specific functions in the body, mind and heart. Through understanding your dosha you know which food, which movements, which music, which colours, ... are good for you and which are not.

Kapha dosha is one of the 3 dosha’s in Ayurveda.

The natural elements make up everything inside us and around us. So our body, mind and heart, and even our personality is made from the elements.

On an elementary level kapha dosha is made earth and water. Earth and water bind together into a nourishing clay. Loving warm hands can give form to the clay and mold it into different shapes. In its essence kapha dosha provides a structure, a container, foundational base to build from, a binding clay that connects and a nourishing soil to root in.

Kapha dosha takes care of your body’s bone structure, muscles and tissues. In the mind kapha dosha retains information in your long term memory. On the heart level, kapha dosha is the compassion and the binding love that keeps people together.

The elements of water and earth are mostly present at the end of the winter and early spring, when the snow melts, it rains and the earth becomes muddy. This creates the ideal soil for the seeds and roots to grow. But when there is too much kapha energy, the mud can drag you down, slow you down.

Someone with al lot of kapha dosha is a gentle person, that likes to keep everything and everyone together. He or she is patient, loving and has very long endurance .

Out of balance kapha dosha can lean towards depression, lethargie, heaviness, feeling sluggish, slow, clinging to things, people, certain situations. On a health level there can be mucus formation, that shows itself in cold, coughs, allergies.
